It is tough to understand Identity, Credential, and Access Management because there are many difficult concepts involved. Finding resources that are free, but well written and comprehensive can be tough. There is one resource that I like and recommend to anyone who wants an overview of this topic.
The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) is a US Federal Government Agency that publishes technical standards covering various topics. They have published a lot of very high-quality material, which often becomes the de-facto industry standard, despite being intended for government agencies.
They operate a site called idmanagement.gov, which includes the Federal Identity, Credential, and Access Management (FICAM) Architecture.
In my opinion, the FICAM Architecture is a fantastic but unknown resource. If you want to understand the conceptual underpinnings of IAM, it’s the best place to start!
See the FICAM Architecture here.
